The MARE URI at UNIPS focuses its research on the areas of the Environment, Biotechnology and Sustainable Energy (EnBioTech Research Group (GI) – Environment, Biotechnology and Sustainable Energy). The EnBioTech research group carries out its work in four main areas:
Environment and Aquaculture
Key areas of research include: water quality and monitoring, wastewater treatment and recovery, environmental biotechnology and aquaculture, the management of estuarine and coastal ecosystems, geophysics, the Internet of Things (IoT), data science and artificial intelligence, sustainable aquaculture production, the health and nutrition of farmed organisms, and the sustainable use of aquatic resources.
Biotechnology
Key areas of research include: the development and optimisation of biotechnological processes in bioreactors, the recovery of agro-industrial waste, the production and utilisation of microalgae, enzymatic processes, the characterisation and exploitation of microorganisms, molecular diagnostics and applications of genetic engineering, and biology and ecology applied to the sustainability of production systems and ecosystem services.
Energy Resources
Key areas of research include: green hydrogen, sustainable fuels, offshore wind power, solar power, geothermal energy, bioenergy, electrochemical storage, smart energy management, electrification, energy efficiency, smart grids, energy recovery from waste, and the integration of renewable energy sources using solutions based on modelling, experimentation, optimisation and digital technologies.
· Smart and Sustainable Maritime Systems
Key areas of research include: the development of autonomous and unmanned maritime vehicles, control and navigation systems, maritime robotics, smart energy management, digitalisation and prototyping to promote the sustainability of maritime transport and port operations, and to enhance the energy efficiency, safety and sustainability of maritime activities.
