Célio Gabriel Figueiredo Pina

Biography

Célio Pina completed his PhD in Biotribology at the University of Leeds (Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering) in 2005, after graduating in Materials Engineering from the University of Lisbon (IST) in 1994. He has been teaching since 1995 and is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Setúbal Polytechnic Institute (IPS).

At IPS, he has held several leadership roles, including President of the Pedagogical Council (until 2018), Coordinator of the Biomedical Technology degree (until 2021), and Coordinator of the research centre CDP2T – Centre for Product Development and Technology Transfer. He is currently the Coordinator of the Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.

His academic activity includes collaborations with industry and the supervision of numerous graduate students. He has co-authored several papers in journals and conference proceedings, has supervised multiple master’s theses in mechanical and biomedical engineering, and co-supervised one PhD thesis. At present, he is supervising four master’s students and co-supervising two PhD students.

His main research interests focus on tribology, materials development (particularly through additive manufacturing) and characterisation, ceramic dental materials, hydrogels for articular cartilage repair, and green materials for applications in the transport sector.
