Ana Ramos Alcântara

Biography

PhD in History, specialising in Contemporary History (FCSH/NOVA, Lisbon, 2019), Master's in Science and Geographic Information Systems (ISEGI/NOVA, 2011) and Bachelor's in History – Archaeology variant (FCSH/NOVA, 2004).

She is a researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of NOVA University Lisbon, part of IN2PAST – Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory – and has been a collaborator at the Digital Humanities Laboratory (Lab_HD) since 2019.

She has participated in projects focused on contemporary Portuguese history and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to historical research, namely: History of the working class in Portugal in the second half of the 19th century; The Development of European Waterways, Road and Rail Infrastructures: A Geographical Information System for the History of European Integration (1825–2005).

She has been an Adjunct Professor at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal since 2024, where she has been teaching courses in the areas of Portuguese History, Teaching and Didactics of Social Sciences and History, History of Education and Cultural Heritage since 2018, and is also a member of several of the School's bodies.

She has been involved in research and development projects in the areas of Local History — such as the Dossier of Memories on the Feira de Sant'Iago (Setúbal) and IMAGO MUNDI — Cartographies, artistic practices, community and representations of the territory — and teacher training and capacity building, namely PRECASE — Capacity Building Programme for the Education System in Guinea-Bissau.

She is the author and co-author of several scientific articles and book chapters devoted mainly to Local History, Urban History and the History of the Working Class in Portugal.
