The operation of the usual solar thermal collectors is based on the absorption of heat from solar radiation through an absorbing surface, usually metallic, which subsequently heats the working fluid, usually water mixed with glycol. There are different types of collectors, the most common being flat and vacuum tube collectors. The main problem with these collectors is their relatively low efficiency, which becomes more evident in situations of low solar radiation. In this project we intend to develop an innovative solar thermal collector, based on the absorption by a Nano-fluid of the energy of photons of solar radiation, through the multiple dispersion of radiation in the Nano-particles of the referred Nano-fluid. These results are of particular interest to the company Solmaior Nano-fluids are composite materials consisting of a liquid to which a small amount of Nano-particles of particular sizes and shapes is added, for example metal oxides, carbides, etc., with the aim of improving the properties of the initial liquid, and consequently the performance of the application for which it is intended. The objective of the project is to develop, build and characterize, in real operating conditions, a prototype of this solar collector. The expected benefits of the prototype, compared to existing collectors on the market, are: more efficient absorption of solar energy, smaller exposure surface for the same gains; do not need antifreeze; lighter, easier to install and less expensive.
