Lines of Investigation

The Marine and Environmental Sciences Center (MARE) a multidisciplinary research center focusing on the Environment and the Sea. It currently constitutes an R&D Unit made up of eight Regional Research Units (URI), eight in research institutions Portuguese higher education [University of Coimbra (MARE-UCoimbra), Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (MARE-IPLeiria), University of Lisbon (MARE-ULisboa), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (MARE-NOVA), ISPA - Instituto Universitário (MARE-ISPA), and University of Évora (MARE-UÉvora) Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (MARE-IPSetúbal), and the University of Madeira (MARE-Madeira).

MARE brings together a total of 660 researchers, of which 237 are integrated doctorate researchers and more than 423 are collaborating research members from the 8 participating partner institutions and others. We rely on the existing R&D infrastructures of MARE's 8 URIs.

MARE has technical and scientific skills to address all aquatic ecosystems, including river basins and adjacent areas, estuaries, coastal and oceanic marine ecosystems, developing its activity in seven thematic lines of research, namely: (i) Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning ; (ii) Hydraulics, Hydrology and Sedimentary Environment; (iii) Aquaculture and Fisheries; (iv) Biotechnology and Resource Valorization; (v) Technological Tools for Exploration and Monitoring; (vi) Environmental Risk and (vii) Governance and Literacy.

MARE's mission is scientific research, technological development and innovation, with an integrative and holistic approach, concentrating a great diversity of skills, capabilities and means, with a nationwide territorial deployment, which develops its problem-oriented research activities. and societal challenges, in close partnership with national and international research centers.

MARE draws on its experience to strategically establish 8 scientific objectives aligned with Ocean outcomes and challenges, and additional cross-cutting objectives:

  • Advance knowledge about the stress factors that affect all ecosystems and aquatic biotypes for a clean ocean;
  • Advance knowledge about the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, promoting good ecological status for a healthy and resilient ocean;
  • Develop scientific knowledge relevant to the ocean economy and explore biotechnology to help sustainably supply society with food and other biotic resources;
  • Advance knowledge about ocean- and nature-based solutions to build resilience of aquatic ecosystems and contribute to a safe ocean;
  • Promote science-based solutions that link research and technology to support open and equitable access to data;
  • Promote ocean literacy and participatory governance models to support change in humanity’s relationship with the ocean;
  • Promote cooperation to improve education and training;
  • Enhance international identity to increase the ability to thrive globally.
